Animal House Shelter Founder Grateful for Support during Crisis

During the severe weather on Friday, June 18 Animal House Shelter in Huntley, Illinois lost all electrical power for 24 hours.  AHS, a no-kill animal shelter which houses up to 200 cats and dogs at any given time, is located in a rural area and uses a well for its water supply.  This meant that besides not having lights, air conditioning, fans, or refrigeration they had no water to give the animals to drink on two hot and humid days.  Employees and volunteers worked throughout the night using flashlights and bottled water to care for the animals.  Saturday morning an urgent email was sent out by a volunteer coordinator to everyone in the shelter’s database asking for ice, jugs of water and coolers and the response was overwhelming!

Following is a personal message from Lesley Irwin, Founder of Animal House Shelter:

Thank you so much to everyone that helped Animal House Shelter this weekend!  Things were pretty rough after the storm.  Our power went out as soon as the storm started around 3:00 pm Friday and we didn’t get electricity restored until about 3:00 pm Saturday.  The outpouring of generosity from all of you and the community was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen!!  There are truly some very special people out there, especially all of you!  Within hours we had the lobby filled with water, ice, volunteers and even food and Gatorade for the people working!

I and all of the dogs and cats at AHS are so VERY blessed to have you in all our lives!  In a time of crisis you all really pulled through and I can not thank you enough!  Everyone who helped make all this possible has my sincere thanks!

JEWEL-OSCO in Huntley, Crystal Lake & Cary all donated water for the animals as soon as they heard!!

Animal House is a non-profit, 501(c)(3), No-Kill shelter for all breeds of dogs and cats.

"No adoptable animal should be euthanized if it can be adopted into a suitable home.  Adoptable animals include only those animals eight weeks of age or older that, at or subsequent to the time the animal is impounded or otherwise taken into possession, have manifested no sign of a behavioral or temperamental defect that could pose a health or safety risk or otherwise make the animal unsuitable for placement as a pet, and have manifested no sign of disease, injury, or congenital or hereditary condition that adversely affects the health of the animal or that is likely to adversely affect the animal's health in the future."

We have been open since June 2002 and have rescued, rehabilitated and placed over 15,000 dogs and cats, to date, into their loving forever homes!

Animal House Shelter, Inc  rescues abused and neglected dogs and cats  and rehabilitates them mentally & physically in order to place them with the best new family.  We rescue 98% of our dogs from high 'kill' shelters, pounds and  various animal control facilities in which they are usually listed as strays, and almost always scheduled to be euthanized.

The best possible veterinary care is always given to those at Animal House Shelter. We never decline treatment, whatever it may entail, if it means that the animal has a chance at a new and healthy life.

We strive to go above and beyond when caring for and socializing our animals.  We understand the importance of getting to know each and every animal available for adoption in an effort to place them in the most perfect home possible.  All dogs are walked 4-5 times a day and socialized with each other and volunteers.  The cats are housed in a large 'free roam' cat room so they can socialize all day with each other, staff, volunteers and potential adopters.

Like people, animals have distinct personalities that make them unique. At Animal House Shelter, we are proud to say that the dogs and cats are treated like our own. We care enough to be certain they are treated with the comfort and respect that they deserve and we make every effort to ensure that they go to the right, forever, permanent, loving home.

All dogs and cats are given all vaccinations- including their Rabies vaccine- They are neutered,  microchipped,  dewormed and heartworm tested (Dogs)  or FeLV/FIV tested (Cats). Dogs are kept on heartworm preventative & all animals receive Frontline Plus monthly by Animal House. Included with the adoption of your new pet is 30 days of  pet insurance for only $1 through www.ShelterCare.com and the first free vet exam (through AHS participating veterinarians).

We are open for adoptions daily from 11 am to 7 pm!

POOR SNOWDROP!!

This 4 year old German Shorthaired Pointer was left outside on our sidewalk one freezing, rainy night.  Luckily one of our staff went outside to their car and saw these eyes staring out of a carrier just before everyone was going home for the night.  We pulled her inside to safety, she was soaking wet and shaking partially because of fear and also because she was cold.

It was clear once we examined her that something was very wrong with her left eye and she had a mammary tumor.  She has been into the eye specialist and has been diagnosed with congenital glaucoma in both eyes.  The pressure was so extreme in her left eye that if it were to go untreated the eye had the potential to pop out of the socket.  We got the eye drops that Snowdrop needs.  Now we need help paying her medical bills, which total $700 so far.  Please consider sponsoring, fostering or adopting Snowdrop!  She is extremely sweet with other dogs & children!

REX
7 year old male Boxer. This poor older guy was adopted out from us 6 years ago and returned because of the baby being allergic. He also has a rare form of diabetes, called diabetes insipidus, in which his body can not concentrate his urine and he is constantly thirsty so he needs to urinate frequently.  Their is a medication to control the urinating but it costs over $200/month.  Please help us help Rex while he is in our care by sponsoring him (click on any Donate Now button throughout the site, fostering or adopting him.  He is an extremely sweet boy, great with children and so very depressed and confused as to why he no longer has a family and is in a shelter.

BUDDY
This poor 10 year old boy was dropped off at an animal control facility in southern Illinois and set to be euthanized.  We stepped in and rescued him.  When he arrived at our shelter we realized his jaw was broken, he was severely dehydrated and had not eaten in a week.  He still wagged his tail, gave us kisses and wanted to be held.  Our local veterinarian said Buddy needed to get to an oral surgeon immediately.  The jaw has been broken for quite a while now, he is in excruciating pain, needs all of his teeth pulled and the jaw fixed.  Even with Buddy being an older boy with a lot of problems with his mouth, he deserves better treatment in life than what he has gotten.  We could not give up on him like other people in his life have.  It is going to cost $2,000 to get Buddy's mouth & jaw fixed and we desperately need your help!  If we can all pull together for Buddy since so many other people have let him down, we can finally help Buddy feel loved for once in his life.  You can click on any 'Donate Now' button throughout the site to donate by credit card or you can mail a check to the shelter address and specify that Buddy is who the donation is for....

*****THANK YOU SO MUCH TO DON & KATHY BUYTAERT FOR DONATING $500 TOWARDS BUDDY's SURGERY!!!  THIS DONATION AND THE MATCHING GIFT DONATION FROM YOUR COMPANY IS GOING TO MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD FOR BUDDY!!

AHS IS NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT!!  PLEASE CLICK ON THE 'ONLINE APPLICATION' BUTTON AND THEN CLICK ON 'EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION'. (DON'T HIT ENTER WHILE FILLING OUT)  -you need to be able to work weekends, holidays, looking for long term employment and have a very flexible schedule.  You can call or email the shelter for more details.

ESTER!!
Ester is a whole lot of dog to love!  She is such a sweet dog but keeps getting passed over because she is a full figured girl.  Ester came to Animal House 4 YEARS AGO!!  Although she loves the staff and volunteers at AHS, she desperately needs to find a loving family to call her own.  She does need to be the only pet as she can get a bit growly with other dogs and cats look like fast moving treats!  She loves to snuggle and would love a home with a nice big yard and plenty of activity to help her melt off the pounds.  She is great with children.  The Girl Scouts always stop by to play with her :)  She is completely housebroken, 5 years old and will be best companion!!

Animal House Shelter – Established 2002

In memory of Kiley…

KILEY'S  STORY

In the summer of 1996, I received a frantic phone call from a friend that a dog had just been dumped out of a car on Lake Cook Rd and was dodging cars in the Barrington area.  I was home during a break from college at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois, where I was an Animal Science major and planning to continue on to become a veterinarian.

The beautiful little girl that was scared to death and dodging cars was a 6 month old female American Staffordshire Terrier, who we soon named Kiley. I had grown up with a family filled with rescue dogs, horses, cats and even wildlife that we rehabilitated from time to time.  I had never had anyone as special as Kiley come into my life.  She returned to college with me as I continued my last year and she quickly opened my eyes to what I needed to do with my passion for animals.

I needed to open a non-profit, no kill animal shelter for all breeds of dogs and cats.  Animal House Shelter was established in June of 2002.

When we began our mission, Kiley helped us in so many ways. Because her temperament was so amazing, she was a natural to help us determine if an animal was dog-friendly. She also mothered several orphaned puppies throughout the years.

She was and always will be my source of inspiration for Animal House Shelter, Inc. She inspired our organization to carry out our mission to save from euthanasia homeless dogs and cats from pounds and animal control facilities.

I lost Kiley to adrenal cancer in 2008.  Because she was such a special soul that impacted my life in ways I can not fully explain, AHS has now rescued, rehabilitated and found forever homes for over 15,000 dogs and cats to date.
